Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8)
At Key Stage 3, Dance is part of the PE core curriculum. However, the Performing Arts department provides an after school KS3 dance club run by Year KS 4 Dance leaders. There are also extra curricular dance clubs available, run after school. No previous experience is necessary. Throughout the year there are also several opportunities for students to be part of school performances.
Key Stage 4 (Years 9 - 11)
At present, students can opt to take dance from Year 9 where students follow the AQA GCSE Dance course which looks at Professional works in more detail and is externally examined. Students will be expected to choreograph both for themselves and for other students. Students are given opportunities to study choreographers and dances in detail. They must be confident enough to want to perform a solo.
Key Stage 5 (Years 12 and 13)
At Sixth Form we offer the opportunity to continue studying Dance with the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Performing Arts: Dance which is the equivalent to one A level. The course enables students to develop the knowledge and understanding further in Performance, Choreography, Contemporary Dance, Appreciation of Professional works and the opportunity to organise and star in their own performance.
Throughout the year there are many opportunities for students to perform and showcase their work to an audience as well as experience trips to see professional dance companies perform live. We have strong links with the community and at Sixth Form, students have the opportunity to take the Dance Leadership Award and work with the local primary schools in our area. This will culminate in an evening showcasing the excellent dancers both at The Buckingham School and from our local primary schools.
We also work closely with the whole of the performing Arts team to support the main school production each year.
