The Buckingham School

The Buckingham School

A Specialist Sports College

The school was designated a Specialist Sports Colleges in March 2004 and was successfully re-designated in December 2009. As a Sports College we position PE and Sport at the centre of the curriculum, using it as a vehicle to develop and improve learning opportunities for all.

As a Sports College, our strategy is to enhance young people’s opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports as well as raising the standards of teaching and learning across all curriculum areas. The school provides many opportunities for cross-curricular projects using the Specialism and we find that students respond well to the sporting aspect and become more engaged with their learning.

Students are able to study for a variety of sporting qualifications ranging from GCSEs and BTECs to Sports Leadership awards and Football Coaching Certificates. There are many opportunities for students of all abilities to enjoy a range of activities and achieve success in the sports that they enjoy the most.

Community Links

Improving our links with the local community is an integral part of our work, as is the work with our partner primary schools in easing the transition between primary and secondary school. The school provides young people the opportunity to access a range of excellent facilities and equipment. We also aim to assist our local community and link clubs in training their volunteer force in order to develop their personal skills and the quality of the opportunities and success in their clubs.

School Sports Partnership

We are the hub site for The Buckingham School Sport Partnership – a ‘family’ of 41 secondary and primary schools. The SSP, led by Mrs Howard is one of the most successful in the country providing a high quality sport and physical education experience for all young people in our family of schools. Mrs Howard works very closely with Headteachers at our partner schools to ensure that we:

  • support the schools in developing physical education and sport
  • engage and involve more young people in community sport
  • identify, deploy and develop appropriate young people as leaders, coaches and officials;
  • support the identification and development of talented young performers
  • work with the Curriculum Leader for PE to monitor and evaluate the impact of PE and school sport in raising whole school standards at The Buckingham School and in our partner schools.

The Buckingham School students are amongst the best Sports Leaders in the county. They engage in a variety of leadership opportunities at The Buckingham School, across our family of schools locally and across the partnership; such as helping out with the organisation and running of primary school sports festivals as well as after school and lunchtime clubs. This helps to build their confidence and develop our students as future leaders, many of whom have already gone on to a future in teaching, coaching and officiating.
